- ➤ Monroe hosts its 2026 Twin City Mardi Gras kick off event today at 11 a.m. at Alley Park — city officials will announce carnival parades and offer King Cake tasting, live music, and food trucks with a rain plan to move the event to Hamilton House Inn. KNOE
- ➤ Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo rescued baby opossums that will be featured in educational programs. The nocturnal animals help control ticks while visitors can enjoy reptile programs and birthday party options until a new exhibit opens this spring. KNOE

- ➤ Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple approved Progressive auto insurance rate cuts to lower bills for nearly 470,000 drivers statewide. Progressive Security’s rates will drop 6.6% for over 270,000 policyholders starting Jan. 16 and Progressive Paloverde will reduce rates by 4% on renewals beginning Feb. 13 (rates vary by driver). - ➤ On Tuesday, the Interstate 20 Economic Development District’s board approved $4.5 million to support a local businessman's plan to build a residential subdivision in the area — the funds will upgrade infrastructure needed for the project. The Ouachita Citizen
- ➤ Louisiana SNAP rules will take effect Feb. 18, banning purchases of candy, soft drinks and energy drinks to promote healthier eating (dietitians say families can still access affordable nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy and grains). KNOE
- ➤ West Monroe will begin large drainage improvements this year (city officials report) to address water flow issues and reduce local flooding risks. Residents can expect the work to progress steadily across the area. The Ouachita Citizen
