CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ ULM will host a ribbon-cutting for the photo exhibit 'Through the Lens of Tianyu Wang: Shaanxi Province in the 1960s-2000s' at Walker Hall (700 University Ave.) on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 12:45 p.m. The exhibit honors photojournalist Tianyu Wang and displays historic images from Shaanxi Province. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ouachita Green’s Heart of Service Award recognized two graduating seniors for their community work and was discussed by Director Sheila Kay Downhour on Good Morning ArkLaMiss (Feb. 10). The segment focused on honoring local service through school engagement. KNOE
- ➤ The Ouachita Parish School Board will consolidate three elementary schools in Richwood, closing Swayze Elementary to be replaced by a modern facility while Shady Grove and Robinson schools will focus on grade-specific education to reduce transfers and save costs (despite some community pushback). KNOE
- ➤ ULM is set to install SkySafe drone detection technology on campus to monitor airspace and boost security during upcoming football games and graduation ceremonies. The system, supported by a FEMA grant and led by assistant professor Mark Johnson, will help protect students and visitors. KNOE
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Oscar, a Louisiana black bear with partial blindness at the Purchase Gardens and Zoo, is part of wildlife preservation efforts. General Curator Lisa Taylor explained that breeding programs and protected habitats have helped his species thrive while Oscar is given treats (feeding wild bears is discouraged). KNOE
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ In February, National Cancer Prevention Month encourages Monroe residents to get routine screenings + adopt healthy habits as experts stress that early detection is key to fighting cancer, which may not show symptoms in its early stages. KNOE
