COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jo Ann Deal from the Better Business Bureau of Monroe appeared on Good Morning ArkLaMiss on Mar. 2 to explain steps for dealing with scams. Her guidance helped Monroe residents learn how to verify suspicious claims and ask for help if needed.  KNOE

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Northeast Louisiana Arts Council has launched Voices of Region 8, a series of free roundtable discussions for artists, educators and arts leaders to share feedback and shape future programs. Sessions are scheduled on March 5, March 17 and March 25 with registration required.  KEDM
  • Phi Alpha Theta will host its annual Ides of March Poetry Reading on Thursday, March 12 at 4 p.m. beneath the H.P. Jones Memorial Oak (between the Hangar and Stubbs Hall) to honor H.P. Jones. The event is open to the campus and northeast Louisiana community.  KEDM
  • Dancing with the Louisiana Stars gives proceeds to Louisiana Delta Ballet to fund local arts in Monroe + strengthening community culture.  KNOE
  • Louisiana Public Broadcasting premieres two new programs that explore local history — LA64: The Journey Begins airs Monday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. and Louisiana’s HBCUs: An American Legacy airs Tuesday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. on broadcast and streaming services.  KEDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library launches in Ouachita Parish today with a $25,000 school readiness tax credit from the Children's Coalition for Northeast Louisiana & community partners working to boost early reading for local kids.  KNOE
  • Cindy G. Foust has been named Executive Director of the ULM Foundation and will oversee Advancement and Alumni Relations while continuing her long career at ULM. She was chosen for her strategic vision and deep connection to the university community.  KNOE
  • The University of Louisiana Monroe held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, March 2 for its bear hug program, which gives children a stuffed bear for comfort if they become lost or need assistance from campus police. The program aims to boost reassurance during campus visits.  KNOE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Shreveport designated this week as Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week and urges residents to test tornado safety plans as severe weather nears — a NOAA weekly weather radio test is set for Wednesday, March 4 at 9:15 a.m. with possible delays if thunderstorms occur.  KEDM
  • Keep Louisiana Beautiful is partnering with Coca-Cola and Osprey Initiative during Love the Boot Week (Louisiana's largest cleanup) from April 18 to 26 to expand recycling in 19 parishes; the project aims to divert thousands of plastic bottles and cans from landfills as part of the challenge for America's 250th.  KEDM
