COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Center for Children and Families received the Nonprofit of the Year Award at the West Monroe-West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards Luncheon on March 20th. The award recognized its work supporting youth and families (including services like Juvenile Drug Court and addiction recovery programs) to help them overcome challenges.  KNOE
  • Today through Saturday, West Monroe is hosting the Arabian Horse Show at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center at 501 Main St—this event will display various breeds of Arabian horses.  MyArkLaMiss

CRIME NEWS

  • Yesterday, around 9:45 a.m., the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested David Esquivel on the 700 block of Smith Street in West Monroe after he intentionally hit his roommate on his bicycle during an argument — he faces a charge of Attempted Second Degree Murder while the injured victim receives critical care.  KEDM
  • The Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on 43 counts of animal cruelty on March 26 after a January report led authorities to investigate Maurice Sheppard’s property in Clayton — where over 40 pit bulls were found abandoned and mistreated — and rescue the dogs, which are now receiving vet care.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northeast Louisiana students can apply for a scholarship that offers up to $2,500 in funds. Applications are open now for eligible students.  KNOE
  • VCOM Louisiana made history by matching 100% of its students with residency programs for two consecutive years—an achievement that underscores the school’s strong commitment to student success.  KNOE
  • High school and college students in Monroe can apply for the Parker Alexander Scholarship that awards up to $2,500. The program requires an original essay on ideas to improve traffic safety in Northeast Louisiana — applications are accepted until April 11th.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ouachita Parish voters will decide on four constitutional amendments on the ballot Saturday in the primary election, including a property tax proposal for West Monroe.  The Ouachita Citizen
  • Public works officials said Monroe loses about $1.2 million each year on trash disposal—an annual shortfall that strains city funds—and the loss is a result of its current agreement.  The Ouachita Citizen
