CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Monroe pedestrian, Eugenia Bates, died on April 7 after being struck on I-20 when 26-year-old driver Mecca King veered onto the shoulder — police said King failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and careless operation. KNOE
- ➤ Monroe Police are seeking help to locate missing Alphonso Lewis and have urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement. KNOE
- ➤ A Monroe woman, 57-year-old Janelle Mills, was charged with 56 counts of animal cruelty on April 8 after deputies forced entry to her home and found animals kept in filthy conditions—with a dead dog stored in trash bags. KNOE
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Riser Middle School held a rally on April 8 to help students prepare for upcoming LEAP tests + education officials said the Elevate by 8 initiative aims to boost scores by at least 8 points when testing begins on April 23. KNOE
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana lawmakers are thinking about stopping SNAP benefits from being used to buy soda so food stamps do not pay for sugary drinks that can hurt children's health—Senate Bill 14, led by Sen. Patrick McMath, has support from top state officials and must pass the full legislative process before it can become law. KNOE
