COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of Louisiana offers a $1000 reward for any information on two missing cats belonging to a Hodge family. The Siamese and Tuxedo cats were removed by Village officials after a neighbor's complaint, and the family has filed formal complaints while HSLA seeks leads.  KNOE
  • Catholic Charities of North Louisiana will host Pigs & A Blanket at Layton Castle, 1133 S. Grand St, on Saturday, Apr. 18 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The event offers a pig roast, live music, kids’ activities, and a raffle to raise funds for rent and electric bill assistance.  KEDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana Delta Community College’s Grow Your Own program lets school aides earn teaching certificates while keeping their jobs. The program, which partners with nine local school districts, now produces nearly 40% of new teaching graduates in the state (the highest rate among community colleges).  KNOE
  • The Ouachita Parish School Board approved spending $2 million to upgrade East Ouachita Middle School’s multipurpose building, with work expected to begin soon.  The Ouachita Citizen
  • Neville High School dismissed classes on Apr. 16 due to a water leak outside the building — water was turned off as a caution while the district investigates if it is sewer water. Superintendent Sam Moore III said Monroe City Schools will provide updates soon.  KNOE
  • Louisiana Delta Community College hosted signing day ceremonies in West Monroe where dual enrolled high school seniors signed letters of intent for technical training; additional events include the Ruston ceremony today at 11 a.m., the Lake Providence event on Tuesday, Apr. 21, and the Tallulah celebration on Tuesday, Apr. 28.  KNOE

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District confirmed West Nile virus in local adult mosquitoes today + health officials are monitoring the situation to protect the community.  The Ouachita Citizen
  • Nutritionist Jen Avis appeared on Good Morning ArkLaMiss to explain how a 1-oz serving of chia seeds can help manage diabetes, lower cholesterol, and support bone health – she advised limiting intake to avoid interference with mineral absorption.  KNOE

SPORTS NEWS

  • The ULM cheerleading team won its sixth national championship at the College Classic Cheerleading Championship held April 10–12 in Orlando, Florida — overcoming roster challenges and an early deduction to secure first place in the Small Co-Ed Traditional division.  KEDM
  • The University of Louisiana Monroe football program will host a two-day event beginning with a fundraising golf tournament on April 24 at Frenchman’s Bend Country Club and its spring game on April 25 at Malone Stadium — events to support the team.  KEDM
  • The Monroe Greenheads held their first indoor football tryout at Rebel Stadium as head coach Terry Bowden led 35 athletes through drills and said tryouts will continue to build the roster for a season set to start at the end of May.  KNOE
