- ➤ City of Monroe announced plans to build its second all-inclusive playground at Forsythe Park to honor Benjamin Sirmon's legacy. Community build days are set for May 7, 8 & 9 for businesses & volunteers to help construct this accessible space. KEDM
- ➤ Hope House, a nonprofit in West Monroe serving the homeless, needs food, cleaning supplies, and paper/plastic goods to support its weekend meal program, and donations can be dropped off at 204 Sandifer Road plus 208 Hood Street after calling Patrick or Dee Jiles at 318-737-8463. KNOE
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Barry Stevens, president and CEO of the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council, announced on Good Morning ArkLaMiss that BLEND 2026 will take place on May 3 to celebrate local arts. The event is set to showcase community creativity and artistic talent. KNOE
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new National Education Association review shows that teacher pay in Louisiana, averaging $56,785, has fallen nearly 5% when adjusted for inflation since 2017 and public school enrollment dropped by 0.3% in the latest school year, adding pressure on local education funding & support. KEDM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction crews began an $813,720 sidewalk project on McMillan Road in West Monroe today as DOTD installs sidewalks and ramps for safer travel. Lane closures from Hines Lane to Fairview Street will last about two weeks while a retaining wall is built and work ends by late summer. KNOE
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local officials urge residents to enable alerts on their phones and review tornado safety plans as tornado season is underway. They advise planning safe shelter spots at home and in public (for example, sturdy buildings) to ensure quick protection when storms approach. KNOE
