- ➤ Mayor Friday Ellis and Healthy Funroe have announced a free Picnic in the Park event at Forsythe Park, set for Thursday, May 21, from 5 PM to 8 PM — featuring food trucks, local vendors, and live music. KEDM
- ➤ Monroe farmers are preparing for seasonal markets with early setup at Monroe Farmer’s Market on Washington Street and vendors arriving at Seventh Square starting Monday, May 18. The Seventh Square market will open on May 30 with live music, food trucks, produce and handmade items. KNOE

- ➤ The West Monroe West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce is set to hold its Annual Business Expo — Executive Director Kristopher Kelley discussed the upcoming plans on Good Morning ArkLaMiss, with more details on timing and location to follow. KNOE
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Strauss Theatre Center will present the Tony Award-winning musical 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying', a satirical comedy on corporate ambition, from May 21–24 and May 28–31 with evening shows at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available online and by calling (318) 323‑6681. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ ULM announced the Spring 2026 President’s and Dean’s Lists on May 13; undergrads meeting full-time enrollment and GPA requirements can contact the Office of Marketing & Communications if they believe an error occurred. KEDM
- ➤ Swayze Elementary School closed May 13 after decades serving our community because of aging infrastructure and shifting student populations. The school board will build a modern facility for 21st century learning. KNOE
- ➤ Louisiana Tech student Jacob Brown received a National Kinesiology Award from the American Kinesiology Association today for his work in sport and exercise psychology. He is one of only two master's students nationally honored and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience. KNOE
- ➤ The Ouachita Parish School Board sustained between $3 million and $5 million in damage from a January ice storm that affected school operations. The Ouachita Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monroe Police held a wreath-laying ceremony on Wednesday, May 13 to honor fallen officers and recognize officers + families serving the community in Monroe. The event reflected a continued commitment to preserving their legacy. KNOE
- ➤ The Louisiana Department of Insurance will host a free Insurance Pop-Up Office at the Abe Pierce Building on Tuesday, May 19 and Wednesday, May 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.—residents should bring their policy documents for in-person help with insurance issues including fortified roofs and wind mitigation.
