COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two new events will take place in West Monroe during Labor Day weekend. The West Monroe Gar Rodeo will begin on August 29 with fishing contests, live music at 7 p.m., and weigh-ins on August 30 at Alley Park—while the West Monroe Boat and Outdoor Expo will run from August 28 to 30 at the West Monroe Sports and Events facility featuring outdoor demonstrations and a casting contest.  KNOE
  • Dancing Cat Farm in Monroe is offering many cats for adoption and seeking help from volunteers and fosters. The farm’s featured cats include 5-month-old Butterfly, a surrendered fluffy cat available soon, and 4-month-old Bug from Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter who will be ready after spay/neuter procedures later this month—community members can contact the farm for details.  KNOE

CRIME NEWS

  • OPSO warns local tire shops in West Monroe after a suspect successfully picked up 18-wheeler tires and attempted two additional fraudulent purchases—businesses are urged to report similar calls.  KEDM
  • Monroe police responded to Orange Street at 6:15 a.m. on May 16th after finding a 42-year-old man dead and are investigating his death as a potential homicide—cause of death remains unknown.  KNOE
  • The NAACP and local law enforcement joined forces yesterday to address violent crime concerns in Ouachita Parish — officials will work together to improve safety.  KNOE

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 16th, Mark Henderson from Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo joined FOX 14’s Jadyn Maloney to talk about a new animal at the zoo—he explained how the addition will soon give visitors a fresh view of wildlife.  MyArkLaMiss

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana is one of 17 states that joined a lawsuit challenging the federal government's use of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act — a move some families say could strip away vital services for children with disabilities. Attorney General Liz Murrill stated the state is contesting federal overreach and expects the claim to be removed from the lawsuit soon.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy announced over $1.5 million in funding for airport work in several cities, including $355,679 for Monroe Regional Airport to repair 2,153 feet of runway—money from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act—designed to keep the runway safe and clear of debris.  KNOE
