COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Memorial Day 2026 approaches Monday, May 25 and the region has observances scheduled starting today. Tallulah holds a memorial ceremony and veteran’s breakfast at 9:30 a.m. while West Monroe plans a ceremony Friday, May 22 at 10 a.m.—other events include a 5K race, parade, and flag installation.  KNOE
  • Monroe Special Events Manager Kimberly Essex told Good Morning ArkLaMiss that the Healthy Funroe Picnic in the Park is happening today — local families will join in community fun and healthy eating.  KNOE
  • The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office cadet camp will begin this June, offering children aged 10 to 18 limited spots to build teamwork and community bonds. Deputy Leah Odom said the camp will include new forensics sessions — giving cadets a chance to learn valuable skills.  KNOE
  • Bizzy Bee Productions will host its 18th Annual Crawfish Craze 5D Barrel Race at Ike Hamilton Expo Center from tomorrow to May 24 — a Memorial Day weekend tradition featuring multiple divisions, free admission, and an expected boost to local business and hotel bookings.  KNOE
  • A Natchez mother, still mourning her 17-year-old daughter who died last week in a Concordia Parish crash, is now working with community leaders & medical workers to provide safer after-school options for local teens while authorities note the 18-year-old driver faces charges.  KNOE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Wildlife officials warn that alcohol causes 40 percent of fatal boating accidents and agents will patrol northern waterways this Memorial Day weekend — a reminder that boating under the influence remains a matter of life and death.  KNOE

  • Team Xplify (2nd Place and Elevator Pitch winners) joined host Cory Crowe on Lagniappe yesterday to discuss their performance at the Entrepreneurship Pelican Cup and share plans for future student business ventures in Louisiana.  KEDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LA Tech has received a $185K grant from the National Science Foundation to fund a two-year AI research project aimed at detecting issues in power grids, water networks, and more. Dr. Abdur Rahman is leading the team with work starting in a new lab at Nethken Hall in Fall.  KNOE
  • Women in Ouachita Parish can join a hands-on self-defense class on July 11 at 9 a.m. at North Delta Training Academy (268 Sheriff Fewell Road) to build confidence and learn protection techniques; registration is required as class spots are limited to 25 participants.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ouachita Parish Police Jury approved a plan outlining long-term community and economic development goals earlier this week, aiming to build on recent economic activity and spur local growth.  The Ouachita Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • Consumer Reports advises Monroe residents to protect yards from ticks by mowing grass to 3 inches, bagging clippings in tick-prone areas, and clearing debris; a 3-foot barrier of dry wood chips or gravel near wooded borders can also deter ticks (and may keep deer and mice away).  KNOE
