A full day of patriotic events is planned downtown for America’s 250th birthday.
The celebration will include a parade by the Krewe of Janus, a kid zone, live music, a hot dog eating contest, and a fireworks and drone show presented by Graphic Packaging International (with sponsorships still available).
9-year-old Lila from Monroe launched Lila's Patrol Pals in April to bring comfort to children with about 3,000 stuffed animals and 304 boxes donated to 27 first responder agencies (including Monroe Police and Louisiana State Police Troop F).
She hopes to expand her donations beyond the area soon.
On July 5, Waverly Baptist Church in Monroe will host a worship service with lunch as it opens a 50-year-old time capsule from its 1976 Bi-Centennial Celebration.
The capsule will reveal letters, photos, and small keepsakes (a window into the church's past) for the local community.
City leaders, educators and health workers met Friday at the Public Safety Center to learn to spot lead hazards in older homes using safety steps — including hiring certified professionals instead of scraping paint.
The city will host a Housing Fair and Expo today offering free lead testing and remediation.
Local leaders say rising housing costs squeeze renters as one-bedroom rents approach $1,000 to $1,200.
A housing expo will connect residents with housing, financial, and job resources today at the Abe Pierce III Convention Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monroe Greenheads will play their first home game today at the Monroe Civic Center at 7:05 p.m. after winning last week, and ticket sales near 1,400 + more expected may boost local restaurants and hotels.
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced that West Monroe will host the State Powerlifting Championships at the West Monroe Sports & Events facility in 2027 and 2028.
The event is expected to draw over 1,000 athletes and boost local dining, lodging and attractions.
