CRIME NEWS

  • On June 6, 2025, West Monroe police responded to a threat complaint after 61-year-old Robert Tolbert allegedly texted that he possessed multiple weapons, ammunition and explosives and threatened a shootout with police; he later came to the station where a search of his Cryer Street home led to his arrest and a terrorizing charge.  MyArkLaMiss

CULTURE NEWS

  • Juneteenth is a federal holiday on June 19 that honors the emancipation of enslaved people, and celebrations are scheduled across ArkLaMiss. In Monroe, the Northeast Louisiana Delta African American Heritage Museum will host a Friends and Family Celebration on Saturday, June 14 from noon to 5:30 p.m.—other areas like Grambling, Ruston, and Bastrop will feature festivals and events with music, food, and various activities.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Monday's meeting, the Ouachita Parish School Board approved a 2024-25 budget that sets aside $100,000 for cafeteria improvements—using more fresh and hydroponic produce—and began a search for an architect for the 2025 East Side Bond project. The board also approved buying property at 404 Register Street near West Monroe High School—intended for conversion to a parking lot.  KNOE

  • On June 9, the City of Monroe closed the Catalpa and North Fourth intersection for contractors to install a new cross-drain and adjust the manhole—drivers can take detours via Desiard Street east or west.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The Southside Economic Development District is renovating its headquarters to serve as a meeting center for local groups but delays have frustrated community members due to a former board member hiring an unlicensed contractor—sparking fears that taxpayers’ money is wasted—and SEDD is now working to choose a new contractor with no set completion timeline.  KNOE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Research shows first responders face high risks for depression, anxiety and suicide. Local EMT Zachary McDowell from Acadian Ambulance in Monroe said each shift is unpredictable and that after tough calls—such as treating a young patient in cardiac arrest—his team talks through the stress to cope.  KNOE
