COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Aug. 21, the NOVA Workforce Institute of Northeast Louisiana will host its annual community luncheon to celebrate its success as part of the community—organizers say the event will highlight the Institute's achievements among local residents.  KNOE
  • NOVA Workforce Institute of Northeast Louisiana will host its ninth annual Update to the Community Luncheon on Aug. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Monroe Civic Center—ULM President Dr. Carrie Castille will serve as keynote and NOVA graduates will share how the program has helped over 2,700 locals and generated more than $35 million in annual wage impact.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carrie Castille, the new President of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, shared her excitement on her first day as she welcomed the Warhawks back to campus. She urged students to get involved and take it all in — a message that highlights the university's commitment to student success in the new academic year.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Professor Carly Irwin at ULM advised incoming freshmen to adjust to new routines—students must wake up early, attend classes several times a week, and manage their own study schedules. She also urged them to join campus activities like sororities and the university's marching band to enrich their college experience.  MyArkLaMiss
  • ULM’s Campus Activities Board is launching welcome events this week including lunch and dinner socials and Greek events to help freshmen adjust while university staff keeps the board on budget—promising a vibrant campus start.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The University of Louisiana-Monroe Student Government Association is preparing for the new academic year under an all-female council led by President Miss Hannah Habisreitinger that will host a dinner social and launch initiatives to support mental health and food security—using the Swipe Out Hunger program to help students in need.  MyArkLaMiss

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joshua French submitted a petition to West Monroe Mayor Staci Mitchell and Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis to keep the Krewe de Riviere parade on its original date of January 31 instead of joining the Krewe of Janus parade on February 7, 2026. More than 1,000 signatures have been gathered so far—local residents say the separate parade supports small businesses.  MyArkLaMiss
