COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twin City Tattoos and Edges Barbershop will host Psyched to Get Inked, a community event for mental health awareness and suicide prevention on September 13 from 2 PM to 10 PM in Monroe—featuring flash tattoos with semicolon designs and a ULM Psychology Department booth offering local resources and collecting weekly barbershop tips for the cause.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Three eight weeks old kitten brothers at Dancing Cat Farm in Monroe are not ready for adoption yet but will be available soon at PetSmart—rescue founder Linda Pettit said the shelter houses 60 to 80 cats and welcomes volunteers.  KNOE
  • Lucky, a few-year-old dog from the Humane Society Adoption Center in Monroe, came in as a puppy and now needs a loving home; the shelter is open Tuesday to Saturday (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and charges a $100 adoption fee while ensuring pets are spayed or neutered and vaccinated.  KNOE

  • Roy Heatherly, President and CEO of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, announced he will retire at the end of the year after nearly five years of leadership—his efforts grew membership to more than 1,120 and expanded community partnerships. CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested suspect — Holden on October 31st and Jones on August 28th — on charges of attempted second-degree murder after a shooting on October 22nd near the intersection of Winnsboro Road and Hadley Street left a victim paralyzed in Monroe.  MyArkLaMiss

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Jeff Landry declared August 29 Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Day to honor victims of the Category 3 storm—he ordered flags to fly at half-staff and urged all faiths to join a statewide day of prayer. The declaration marks the 20th anniversary of the storm that reshaped Louisiana’s disaster response.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Louisiana and U.S. flags were ordered to be flown at half-staff on Friday for the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Gov. Jeff Landry proclaimed Aug 29 as Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Day and urged prayer — honoring those lost and Louisiana's ongoing recovery efforts.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Sterlington officials installed new road signs to address drivers misusing the left lane after a state law raised penalties for slow driving—officials say the signs will improve traffic flow and safety.  MyArkLaMiss
