- ➤ ULM is celebrating its annual homecoming week that starts with a parade today and includes the University Mile, a Greek happy hour tomorrow, a retiree’s luncheon, and a football game. The festivities honor alumni at the Good Morning Gala—officials stress that students should balance events with classes. MyArkLaMiss
- ➤ The Monroe Chamber of Commerce announced a series of upcoming events including the 19th annual golf tournament at Frenchmen’s Bend in Sterlington on September 19 (morning and afternoon flights will be available) and a State of Local Government Lunch on September 30 at Monroe Civic Center Banquet Hall with Mayor Ellis and other officials, including Shane Smiley, speaking. The Cyber Technology Summit on October 8 at Monroe Civic Center will focus on AI with keynote Tom Barnett and an AI panel, while a Holiday Gala & Auction featuring Robert Wright and a Sparktacular Fireworks Show sponsored by Entergy are scheduled for December 4 and a future date, respectively. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Monroe police arrested Roman Caldwell (17) on September 2 after a neighbor's video showed him holding something near his waistband while another suspect allegedly pointed a handgun at a victim, and he is accused of armed robbery and illegal possession during an incident (near Luther Drive). - ➤ A five-year-old boy named William left his home in Jacksonville to visit Chick-fil-A for breakfast and was safely found by officers after restaurant staff fed him—his parents were surprised by his escape and he later thanked the officers with cookies. MyArkLaMiss
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monroe Councilman Doug Harvey warned Ouachita Parish residents on social media about a door-to-door solicitation scam that began in Ruston and has spread to Monroe & he stressed that painted curb numbers are not city-mandated and urged people not to hand over money. MyArkLaMiss
- ➤ At Tuesday’s packed meeting in Monroe, many residents heard Police Jury President Shane Smiley apologize for his hurtful remarks caught on a viral recording, while community members & local officials called for his recall. The petition that needs 11,270 signatures & could remove him is now under review. MyArkLaMiss
- ➤ The West Monroe Board of Aldermen approved Daniel Overturf as the new fire chief on September 2nd. He brings over 25 years of fire service experience — including work with Monroe Fire and the Navy — and will begin his new role in mid-September. KEDM
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The University of Louisiana Monroe will host its Suicide Prevention Month Wellness Walk on Wednesday, September 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—the walk will start at the Liew International Student Center and end at The Grove where resource tables, vendors and guest speakers will offer mental health support. Organized by ULM’s Office of Global and Multicultural Affairs and the Self-Development, Counseling and Special Accommodations Center, the event aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention.
