COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trixie is a kind and loving pet available for adoption at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter—she is about two years old and fully grown. The shelter welcomes visits on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  KNOE

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Monroe Symphony Orchestra has a new conductor this season. John Hodges, who studied with Leonard Bernstein and once guest conducted for the orchestra, will lead the first concert today at Hotel Monroe featuring music by Bach.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Carroll High School cheerleaders joined the Downs Law Firm Cheerleader Challenge to bring a message of positivity and inspire younger students. The team, including Teddarius Woods— the first male cheerleader— hopes to leave a legacy as viewers will vote on their favorite team for a pizza party win.  KNOE
  • Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo has welcomed a new curator, Mr. Jody Nobles, who will work with Nessie, an Argentine Tegu used during educational programs. Nessie, known for her ability to lose and regrow her tail, will appear on field trips and public walks—teaching visitors about this unique reptile.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Yesterday, the University of Louisiana Monroe honored longtime employee Camile Currier by naming the student theatre at the Bayou Pointe Event Center after him. He devoted 50 years to ULM—helping plan key campus facilities and praising the new president's vision for the future.  MyArkLaMiss

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On September 12, deputies rescued an injured bald eagle near Monroe after it was seen flying weakly, and they are now assessing its condition.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana will switch to a closed primary system next year — all registered voters will soon receive a mailout with details, and no party voters must choose a major party to vote in U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Louisiana Supreme Court, Public Service Commission, and BESE board races. Party primaries are set for April with run-offs in May — the change was approved in 2024 to better define party lines at the ballot box.  MyArkLaMiss

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four North Louisiana high school teams played against Arkansas teams in week 2 of Friday Night Blitz on Friday night—battling closely for bragging rights as local fans cheered the matchups.  KNOE
