COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gene's Caring Hands, a local nonprofit (founded in 2004) has supported thousands of families across Northeast Louisiana during winter storms and a water crisis and will host a bike giveaway in December. CEO Eugene Whitney and other stakeholders say the group eases burdens for parents by providing essentials like school supplies and extracurricular support.  KNOE
  • The Monroe Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Green Qube Giveaway that offers a chance to win $500 and free Johnny’s Pizza for a year (this giveaway lasts for four weeks). Clue 4 for week 1 says the hidden qube is in open fields near a school (it is not inside any local buildings).  MyArkLaMiss
  • The Ark-La-Miss Fair has been running since September 26 and will continue until October 5—visitors in Monroe enjoy rides, games, live music, and food with activities for all ages. Fair Board President Mike Shields and board member Clint Miller said the event provides a mix of attractions that bonds the community.  MyArkLaMiss

CULTURE NEWS

  • On October 23, the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe will host Party 318, a free community event with live music, games, food trucks, and complimentary beverages for guests 21 and older—its annual Raise the Roof fundraiser will feature a live auction of unique blue slate tiles that ends at 8 p.m. to support local art.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show marks its 50th anniversary, having released on September 26 in theaters nationwide—and later became a cult classic as midnight screenings drew a devoted crowd. Local producer Josh Madden brought a stage version to Monroe in 2023 and plans to return in 2026—celebrating the film’s lasting impact.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation was awarded the 2025 Trustees’ Award for Organizational Excellence by the National Trust for Historic Preservation—one of eight winners recognized for its 46 years of protecting Louisiana historic sites.  KNOE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Since January, Grow NELA followed up on 43 business leads worth $17.6 billion and created 5,600 jobs in Northeast Louisiana—Meta’s renewable energy investment and Entergy’s plan for three gas-powered plants are fueling this growth.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Richwood High School cheerleaders made their first appearance in Week 4 of the Downs Law Firm Cheerleader Challenge yesterday — they expressed hope for strong competition in upcoming rounds.  KNOE
  • River Oaks High School in Monroe was named one of 25 finalists in T-Mobile’s Friday Night Lights 5G competition — it won a $25,000 prize to improve its track damaged by a 2016 flood after beating out 3,975 schools. The school will now compete for a million-dollar stadium upgrade.  MyArkLaMiss

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is awarding West Monroe and Ouachita Parish $20k for a new pilot program to fight illegal waste tire disposal—money that local officials can use for equipment or hiring extra workers. The funds follow town hall meetings held last year and support efforts to better manage waste in the community.  KNOE

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Garrett said Tairn is adaptable and fits well in many homes—Gus Gus is more reserved and better for calm settings, and both pets are available for adoption.  KNOE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, as ULM faces Arkansas State at 2 p.m. during homecoming, Cory Crowe marks his 300th consecutive game as the voice of the Warhawks—he has not missed a game since the 2000 season. The longtime announcer, a 1995 ULM graduate and director at 90.3 KEDM Public Radio, has earned awards for his work.  MyArkLaMiss
  • On Friday, week four of Friday Night Blitz featured three high school football games — West Monroe, which leads its series 5-2 over Catholic after a tough loss, tried to rebound; West Ouachita rematched Sterlington after a 29-28 loss last year; and Carroll hosted General Trass during homecoming as both teams had won their last games. Catholic, known as the Bears, have claimed five state titles since 2015.  KNOE
