COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Monroe Symphony League Book Fair will take place on Saturday, October 4 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), Sunday, October 5 (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.), Friday, October 10 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and Saturday, October 11 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at 320 North Fourth Street—where shoppers will pay a $2 admission fee each day to browse used books, magazines, records, CDs, DVDs, and more. This event offers a chance for locals to find affordable treasures and a wide variety of secondhand items.  KEDM
  • The Monroe Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Green Qube Giveaway that offers locals a chance to win $500 and free Johnny’s Pizza for a year by solving daily clues on the KTVE/KARD shows over the next four weeks—this week’s clue notes the qube is hidden near powerlines, street signs, and the Ouachita River and is not placed inside any businesses.  MyArkLaMiss

CULTURE NEWS

  • Georgia Street announced on Good Morning ArkLaMiss that the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council’s Brown Bag Concert Series will return to Monroe in October — featuring free outdoor shows by local artists.  KNOE
  • The Northeast Louisiana Celtic Festival will take place on Saturday, October 4 at Lazarre Park in West Monroe and feature Highland Games from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with $5 admission for those aged 10 and up and free entry for children under 10—athletes can register in advance to participate.  KEDM
  • SYAA in partnership with RocketFast! Car Wash is hosting a haunted car wash on October 24 and 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at 2811 Louisville Ave.—the event will offer spooky scares and clean cars while raising funds for youth arts programs.  KEDM
  • The Downtown Gallery Crawl starts on October 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in downtown Monroe and West Monroe. Visitors will explore galleries, meet artists, and ride a wagon between areas — with stops including NELA Arts Council and Courtyard Galerie.  KEDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday evening, the Monroe City School Board discussed curriculum changes to boost reading levels, and a ULM professor is already making a difference by using new strategies to help students improve.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayors from Monroe, Richwood, and Sterlington met this week to share plans for growth including the META data center, infrastructure upgrades, and new youth programs while asking residents for input at community meetings. Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis said crime has dropped since 2020 and urged public support for the new master plan.  KNOE
  • Local leaders speak at the Monroe Chamber of Commerce’s State of Local Government Luncheon at the Civic Center Banquet Hall today — the event is live streamed on Facebook and YouTube.  MyArkLaMiss

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Hotel Monroe in Monroe became the nation’s first full-service hotel to be certified gluten-free after creating a kitchen free of cross-contamination, and head baker Deidre Mathis developed gluten-free beignets (using Bob Mills one-for-one flour) to offer a safe treat for guests with dietary restrictions.  MyArkLaMiss
