  • Discover Monroe-West Monroe is asking Ouachita Parish churches to submit details on candlelight and Christmas worship services for their holiday guides—churches must send in the information by Friday, October 17.  MyArkLaMiss

  • The Silver Spoon food truck started as a family dinner tradition and now serves simple Southern dishes like rice bowls, sandwiches, baked potatoes, smoked brisket plates and sweet treats—gaining a large online following on TikTok. The family-run truck builds community connection as it brings comfort and flavor to Northeast Louisiana.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • River Oaks High School was named one of 25 finalists in a national T-Mobile competition and received a $25,000 grant for updating its 50-year-old stadium and track—voting continues daily through October 24 to help secure a $1 million prize for further renovations.  MyArkLaMiss
  • Carley Gonzalez of West Monroe earned the Eagle Scout badge Saturday, October 4th, joining the 8% of scouts who receive this rare honor and the 2.5% who are girls—she said the award was both relieving and fulfilling.  KNOE
  • Oak Grove High School students Avery Hankins, Jenna Simmons, and Ella Moody launched a free pop-up shop — Help a Girl Out — to provide gently used homecoming dresses to students in need. Donations will be accepted at the school's media center through Oct. 10.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the U.S. Postal Service raised prices on some services — a move to cover extra handling costs for the busy holiday season — and the new rates will remain in effect until January 2026.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The Ouachita Parish Police Jury met October 6 and discussed several agenda items—public details are expected soon.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The ACLU filed a lawsuit on Monday against ICE for detaining immigrants at a notorious Louisiana prison where detainees were held for crimes they had already served time for. The lawsuit alleges the detention facility has poor conditions—foul water and a shortage of basic supplies—that led detainees to go on hunger strike.  KNOE

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Fire Prevention Week (October 5 through 11), the American Red Cross of Louisiana advises Monroe families to test smoke alarms and review their escape plans to lower the risk of deadly home fires. Officials report that over 920 home fires have been recorded this year, already exceeding the totals from 2024.  KNOE
  • Delhi Hospital will host the Grin & Bear It 5K and 10K runs soon to support community health—outreach coordinator Marley Clevenger and development manager Brooke Nyiri shared details on Good Morning ArkLaMiss yesterday. The event aims to promote wellness and bring the community together.  KNOE
