COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The University of Louisiana-Monroe will host its annual trunk or treat on Monday, October 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the parking lot in front of the Student Center on Mitchell Street, where attendees should park on the south side of Stubbs Hall and Brown Hall as the street is closed to traffic—costumes are optional and the event is free.  MyArkLaMiss
  • KNOE held its inaugural First Responder of the Year banquet on October 20, honoring local first responders for their service — the event established a new way to recognize these dedicated community members.  KNOE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An EF1 tornado touched down Saturday evening in southern Madison Parish 13 miles northwest of Newellton and caused tree damage and destruction of a mobile home and barns while no injuries were reported, the National Service Office in Jackson confirmed.  KNOE

CULTURE NEWS

  • A fresh, contemporary stage production of Anne of Green Gables featuring an all-girl cast will open soon and brings a new twist to the classic tale. School performances are set for October 23 at 2:00 p.m. and October 30 at 3:00 p.m.—public shows run on October 25, October 26 and November 1 at 7:00 p.m. with tickets on sale now.  KEDM
  • The Masur Museum in Monroe will host pARTy 318! on October 23 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., offering free admission, food trucks, free wine and beer, live music and games — the event will also feature an online auction of art made from tiles of its original roof damaged by a 2020 tornado to raise funds for art installations and maintenance.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana State Police remind drivers to slow down and obey school bus rules during National School Bus Safety Week from Oct. 20—24. Officials note that more than 1,000 deaths occurred in school bus crashes from 2014 to 2023—drivers must stop when buses flash red lights and keep 30 feet away to protect children.  KNOE
  • On Oct. 20, 1803, the Senate ratified the treaty to buy the Louisiana Territory from France—adding 828,000 square miles to the nation. The $15 million deal later led to the creation of thirteen states—doubling the country’s size.  KNOE

  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reminds hunters and fishers to secure proper permits and use safety gear—such as a tree harness and life jacket—to reduce the risk of injury during hunting season. John-David Owen of Honey Hole emphasized that careful gun handling remains essential for outdoor safety.  KNOE
  • The Moccasins lost game two of the season to Baton Rouge Zydeco on Oct 18 when Seth Bacon returned to the Snake Pit — a move that may signal shifts in team strategy for upcoming contests.  KNOE
