COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kiwanis Club of Greater Ouachita will host its 70th annual Pancake Day on November 4 at First Methodist Church on Loop Road, serving pancakes, sausage and drinks from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.—charges of $10 per person support local children’s programs such as scholarships, MedCamps and reading initiatives.  KEDM
  • Pamela Hart — known as Pamela Moore — broke barriers as one of KNOE’s first Black anchors in Monroe during the mid‑1980s and her trailblazing work inspired reporter Jasmine Anderson to share our community’s stories.  KNOE
  • United Way of Northeast Louisiana and the Northeast Louisiana Bar Foundation continue The Heirship Project to offer free workshops and legal sessions to help families with heir property issues at the Monroe office with a virtual option. The next workshop is on November 13—featuring attorney sessions from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and community sessions from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.—with free follow-up legal consultations provided.  KEDM
  • At the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, curator Mr. Joey Nobles is showcasing Leopold—a leopard tortoise from Africa known for his elephant-like legs and land-based lifestyle. Leopold, noted for his calm nature and easy care, offers visitors a unique look at an ancient species that can live up to 50 years.  MyArkLaMiss

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ULM Professor Emeritus of Biology Dr. John Carr received the Pritchard Turtle Conservation Lifetime Achievement Award from Turtle Survival Alliance for his work on Latin American Wood Turtles and Alligator Snapping Turtles. He was one of four 2025 award recipients — his career at ULM and abroad includes mentoring students — and his research has guided key conservation efforts.  MyArkLaMiss
  • ULM College of Pharmacy has begun its Hall of Fame to honor alumni and leaders for their work in pharmacy. The event was held at Monroe’s Restaurant on September 26—inducting figures like the late Carolyn Oubre Maggio, Marty R. McKay, and Peggy Van while nominations for future inductees open in January.  KEDM

  • As temperatures drop, the Ouachita Parish Fire Department is urging West Monroe residents to have heating systems inspected by professionals to prevent house fires. Fire Chief Dusty Harris recommends keeping a three-foot gap around space heaters—avoiding extension cords and using professionally tested equipment to reduce risks.  MyArkLaMiss

  • Michaela Taylor with River Cities Humane Society for Cats said Flipper (4 months old) is a loving kitten who can be a bit hyper and is available for adoption (local families can come meet him).  KNOE

  • The Neville Tigers beat the West Monroe Rebels with a 22-19 win in the Farm Bureau Game of the Week — the close score kept fans engaged until the final play.  KNOE
