COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Ouachita Parish and surrounding areas can visit the Monroe Civic Center as the NELA Home Show brings local contractors + vendors together to showcase home improvement supplies and services.  KNOE
  • Local organizations including the Monroe Museum have partnered for a free parenting workshop led by Dr. Emily Jones with St. Patrick’s Day-themed activities and snacks for kids this week. Meanwhile, the Monroe Fire Department reported a shortage of firefighters and is actively recruiting to fill positions.  KNOE

CULTURE NEWS

  • West Monroe City Hall is inviting local and regional artists to submit 2-dimensional work for an America’s 250th Anniversary celebration art showcase. Selected pieces will be displayed at city hall throughout spring — submissions are due by March 17.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Mar. 13, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries declared an emergency after chronic wasting disease was found in a deer in Ouachita Parish, affecting Lincoln, Jackson, Union, Morehouse, Caldwell and Richland Parishes.  KNOE
  • Senate Bill 4 in the Louisiana Legislature could remove the state’s requirement for fluoride in public water, allowing community voters to decide on its use while some dentists warn the change might hurt public health.  KNOE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Acadian Ambulance advises Monroe residents to call 911 when allergy symptoms become severe, such as trouble breathing, throat swelling, or fainting, and to keep emergency medications like inhalers or epinephrine auto-injectors readily accessible during allergy season.  KNOE

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Barker (a lively, affectionate pup) is available for adoption at a local shelter now. He is neutered, vaccinated, and enjoys playtime and cuddles, waiting to bring joy to a new family.  KNOE
  • The Monroe Animal Shelter is offering Elvis (neutered, current with shots, well-trained, and housebroken) for adoption today; he gets along well with other dogs and awaits a loving home.  KNOE
