COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo has musk turtles in the Reptile Building, which is closed due to new exhibit construction. General Curator Lisa Taylor explained the turtles grow to three to six inches, emit a strong odor to deter predators, and are omnivores that climb trees+ visitors can see them at educational programs once construction is completed.  KNOE
  • Goodwill Industries of North Louisiana Inc. will host a community appreciation event in West Monroe on August 9 to spread awareness about how donations serve the public.  KNOE

CRIME NEWS

  • Monroe police are investigating a homicide that occurred on August 4—further details will be announced.  KNOE
  • A West Monroe man, 33-year-old Barron V. Muse, was arrested on August 4 after deputies responded to a battery complaint from Glenwood Hospital following a July 30 incident in which he allegedly struck his girlfriend with a belt, confined her for over 36 hours by boarding the back door and locking the front door, and forced her to remain until she escaped through a rear window after trying to leave a week earlier — authorities have charged him with kidnapping, violating a protective order, resisting an officer, and aggravated domestic abuse battery.  MyArkLaMiss

  • Monroe hosts the Downtown Gallery Crawl tomorrow from 5 PM to 9 PM in 15 local galleries across Monroe and West Monroe—featuring live music, snow cones, and a hop on wagon at Alley Park to connect the exhibits. The 17-year-old event brings together local artists, emerging talents, and art lovers for an evening of creative celebration.  KEDM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hotel Monroe opened its doors today with a ribbon cutting led by local leaders such as the Chamber of Commerce, State Representative Michael Echols and Kristi Echols. The restored building, which once housed a grocery and opera house, now offers 69 guest rooms, local artwork and modern amenities — a blend of Southern charm and luxury — that is expected to boost tourism and economic growth in downtown Monroe.  MyArkLaMiss

  • ULM named head football coach Bryant Vincent as interim athletic director pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board—this move came one day after John Hartwell resigned—and ULM will launch a nationwide search for a permanent AD as Vincent, who has led the team since December 2023, takes on the role.  KNOE
