COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Chennault Aviation & Military Museum will host Chennault Fest 2025 from Friday, Nov. 7th to Saturday, Nov. 8th at 701 Kansas Lane in Monroe, featuring live music, hot air balloons & food trucks along with a petting zoo & kids zone starting at 3 p.m. each day. The free festival is a fundraiser for the museum and is expected to produce an estimated economic impact of $299,801.47 for Ouachita Parish.  MyArkLaMiss

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Louisiana is facing a work shortage as officials report 114,000 job openings with only 90,000 unemployed and 58% of adults working. On Oct. 28, leaders met in West Monroe at a luncheon hosted by Louisiana Works to plan employer collaboration and bring skilled workers home.  KNOE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Louisiana-Monroe will host its annual Titleholders Competitions for Mr. and Miss ULM on November 7 at 7:00 p.m. and November 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Brown Auditorium on campus — tickets cost $10 for general admission and $5 for ULM students, faculty and staff; the Mr. ULM Competition, now in its 8th year with five contestants, and the 72nd Miss ULM Competition, featuring nine contestants, will crown new titleholders for 2025-2026.  MyArkLaMiss
  • The TRIO program at ULM uses over $1 million in federal funding to support first-generation, low-income, and student parent students with tutoring, mentoring, and childcare help — retention rates have risen above 80%, and an event for first-generation students will be held on Nov. 11.  KNOE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ULM’s TRIO program—designed for first-generation, low-income students and student parents—made gains after receiving a $1.3 million federal grant to support tutoring, mentoring and career preparation. Meanwhile, Monroe City Council voted unanimously on an ordinance—sponsored by Doug Harvey—that will regulate sober living homes by imposing restrictions on residences for those in recovery.  KNOE
